TIPS
ANGLING 101 I am often approached at boat and tackle shows or fishing seminars by both adults and young people wanting to know how to get started in fishing. Where can you go to get the basic information on how to fish, not just the equipment and tackle needed, but how to get started from scratch? What kind of fish to fish for, what do they look like, how do you rig the bait or lures, how do you tie a knot, what kind of rod and reel? Read more...
DEVELOP A PATTERN How many times have you heard or read a newspaper on a bass tournament winner using such-and-such pattern for winning the tournament? What are they talking about? What is a pattern? A pattern is the method, how, what, sometimes when, and where in a given lake you are catching bass consistently. There can be a pattern within a pattern, and there can also be more than one pattern used during the day. Typically patterns are easier to develop for reservoirs. Read more...
HOW TO MAKE THE TOP 10 "Ninety percent of the bass that are caught are caught by ten percente of the anglers" - Dean Stroman Unfortunately, there is much truth in Dean's quote. If 10 percent of the anglers do in fact catch 90 percent of all of the bass that are caught, what do they know that the other 90 percent don't know and how would an angler move from the 90 percent group to the 10 percent group? SPAWNING Finally, spring is here. This brings up a pivotal time in bass fishing: spawning bass (or bedding bass). This is a key opportunity and time to catch bass and is a favorite among bass fisherman, especially those who like to sight fish. I believe it is also a good time for beginner anglers. They get to see the fish they are trying to catch, which can keep a novice angler interested. But, it can also be difficult. Read more...
EQUIPMENT
SHALLOW TO DEEP BASS FISHING It was May the 15th, 1989. I was fishing a milfoil bed on the outside of a large spawning cove. The water temperature was 72 to 73 degrees. Up in the cove there were still a few males, and every now and then I saw a three- or four-pounder suspended by a dock post. Read more...
CHOOSE THE RIGHT LINE There are lots of lines on the market nowadays. Super line, flurocarbon, and monofilament being the most common. So which ones do you use? Read more...
CHOOSING THE RIGHT ROD Sit down with a cup of coffee, tea, or soft drink, and really look at your equipment. Determine which rod and reel is your favorite, then ask yourself why you like that combination. Each rod and reel has a particular function. You can't use a heavy-action rod to cast topwater baits and expect to get the reaction needed from the bait to catch fish. Examine your rods carefully. Are they the correct type of rods for the way you really fish? Read more...
SEASONAL
EARLY WINTER BASS Early winter can be a very frustrating time of year for trophy largemouth bass or it can be the most exciting time of year. If you fish the right lake, at the right time, you can have the best bass fishing of your life, and good enough to count for someone else's life too. Read more...
EARLY SUMMER FISHING Early summer tournament fishing is some of the most consistent fishing you will have for the whole year. First and foremost fronts are a rarity this time of the year. The summer crowd is not yet out in full force. The skiers and personal watercraft pests are just now showing up. The high winds that have plagued us all spring are quieting down now. What does all this mean to the tournament anglers? It means if you find some fish now or establish a pattern, more than likely it will hold for you until your tournament. Read more...
TECHNIQUES
FLIPPING AND PITCHING These techniques are used on inactive bass so a stealth approach and presentation is essential. They're best suited when fish have a small strike zone and are in off-color or muddy water. Flipping is best suited for murky water and dense cover whereas pitching is the better choice in clear water and cover not as thick. Read more...
CRANKBAITS are among the favorite baits of professional tournament fishermen because they act as "bird dogs" in their search for bass. One of the greatest advantages of fishing these lures (especially the deep-diving type) is the vast amount of water you can cover, especially when bass are using a depth of 10 to 20 feet. Crankbaits have a built-in action designed to function when the fisherman merely retrieves the lure steadily, or "cranks" it in. They have protruding "lips" that cause them to dive beneath the surface when retrieved. Read more....
